Karmachina für VGF Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main
A historic tram operated by the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt (VGF) brings "Digital Romantic" onto the rails. Instead of passengers, the railcar from 1956 transports a multimedia installation to Frankfurt's districts - a journey in search of light, as undertaken by a number of 19th and 20th century painters in artistic experiments. Influenced by Goethe's theory of color, they explored the use of color and light. We embark on a journey through the emotional, spiritual and perceptive landscapes of these painters and thinkers.
We encounter the master of romanticism, Otto Runge (1777-1810), who created his own color system with the color sphere, William Turner (1775-1851), the ultimate painter of light, who laid the foundation for the birth of impressionism, Paul Signac (1863-1935) and Georges Seurat (1859-1891), the pointillists who broke up colors into tiny dots, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), the founder of abstract painting, who even created a color opera, Josef Albers (1888-1976), who filled abstract geometric shapes with primary colors, and finally Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), who irritates the eye of the beholder with surrealistic geometric structures and colours.
